Dapat diargumentasikan bahwa dari beberapa dokumen yang dipersyaratkan untuk pengajuan lamaran sebagaimana dijelaskan tersebut, CV atau Riwayat Hidup merupakan dokumen yang paling diperhatikan oleh calon pemberi kerja. Bagaimana pun, CV atau Riwayat Hidup berisi informasi mengenai siapa calon pekerja atau pelamar, bagaimana pendidikan calon pekerja atau pelamar, prestasi apa yang pernah diraih calon pekerja atau pelamar, keahlian apa yang dikuasai oleh calon pekerja atau pelamar dan lain-lain.
Tidak terdapat suatu definisi khusus dari Surat Lamaran Kerja Umum. Namun, apabila dilihat dari sudut pandang Bbahasa IIndonesia secara resmi, maka terminologiy tersebut terdiri dari kata (i) Surat; (ii) Lamaran; (iii) Kerja; dan (iv) Umum. Adapun menurut Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), kata-kata tersebut memiliki makna sebagai berikut:
Dari definisi kata-kata sebagaimana dijelaskan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa arti dari Surat Lamaran Kerja adalah tulisan pada secarik kertas (dapat juga berupa surat elektronik) yang tujuannya adalah untuk mengajukan lamaran atas suatu jabatan atau posisi pekerjaan dalam bidang usaha apa pun.
Surat Lamaran Kerja berfungsi sebagai suatu alat komunikasi tertulis dari calon pekerja atau pelamar kepada calon pemberi kerja atau perusahaan. Di dalam Surat Lamaran Kerja tersebut, calon pekerja atau pelamar mengutarakan maksud dan tujuan kepada calon pemberi kerja atau perusahaan untuk mengajukan lamaran atas suatu jabatan atau posisi. Apabila diibaratkan dokumen-dokumen sebagaimana telah disebutkan sebagai suatu paket, maka Surat Lamaran Kerja adalah sebagai surat pengantarnya. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa Surat Lamaran Kerja merupakan suatu dokumen yang tidak kalah penting dari sebuah CV atau Riwayat Hidup. Oleh karena apabila calon pekerja atau pelamar hendak mengajukan lamaran dengan mengirimkan CV atau Riwayat Hidup tanpa dilengkapi Surat Lamaran Kerja maka CV atau Riwayat Hidup tersebut akan seperti sebuah ‘surat kaleng’, yaitu dokumen yang dikirimkan tanpa ada kejelasan maksud dan tujuannya.
